purplesn0w leaves nothing resident. ultrasn0w leaves two things resident, a task in the baseband and a process on the phone. Although if they are working as they are supposed to, they supposedly don't draw power.
The battery issues def aren't caused by purplesn0w or purplera1n(neither of which touch very much, Freeze is a native app). Cydia and whatever else you install could be responsible.
no more airplane mode, restart just to get wifi working!

awesome awesome job george. I'm a legit AT&T customer that just likes to have the newest/coolest software and unlock and this one work's PERFECTLY with my legit AT&T sim. Wifi, cell, 3g, and edge all work and no battery drain.
No restart required either, please release the source on RC2!
@James silly question... just for GSM carriers, sprint verizon and other that doesnt offer GSM or to be more specific, others carriers that dont give you any sim card wont work with any iPhone

Quick question... by legaly activated... that means that the iphone got to the activated in USA and with a working at&t sim card or... it can be activated in other country but with a at&t sim card, I live in Peru and I have and AT&T sim card even though theres no AT&T in here and got a sim from a friend from USA, thanx :)
Would be great, if you could make a version for the iPhone 3G too. Ultrasn0w is really unstable: signal loss, no 3g working... (if you take a look at the comments @ dev-team).

Officially activated basically means you activated it with iTunes. In the US that would mean having signed up with AT&T.
My guess is that your phone is not activated and you therefore need to wait for a version of purplesn0w that hacks the activation for you (i.e. hacktivation).

@Daiduong first off, why did you restore when you can just uninstall ultrasn0w and install purplesn0w? :)
first off, purplera1n will jailbreak the iPhone 3G S and then run freeze in order to get cydia. make sure you follow the directions which George has on the blog.
then install purplesn0w and you don't have to reboot. after 30 seconds, it should have service.

Can anybody confirm if this will cleanly run on my UK 3Gs? I can legally activate with my O2 sim card but am looking to run my phone with a T-Mobile sim..
I assume that all I need to do is, restore, activate, jailbreak with ra1n, install sn0w, insert T-mobile sim?

@Robert yes I can confirm that it works. Just make sure that you are near WiFi, remove ultrasn0w, restart, install purplera1n RC2. Everything works great. It may work just as well without the restart but I didn't try.
@Razvan Dan Dobre you don't necessarily have to restart after removing ultrasn0w. saves you a min of your time :D and its not purplera1n u install after...its purplesn0w :D
@orrin yes I can confirm. My 32 GB 3GS is also bought from O2, I had many problems with WiFi and signal in the past (on ultrasn0w) and now it works juuuust fine on purplera1n RC2.
And yes, that is the right (complete) sequence, or you can try to uninstall ultrasn0w and install purplera1n and if you haven't messed with the phone much it will work just as well.

@Daiduong go to cydia and install CyDelete, then go to settings on your springboard and go to CyDelete and turn on non application something on those lines... lol then highlight Freeze and delete. Simple :)

Yes!!! Finally a stable unlock no more WiFi/GPS problems and fading cell signal.
I simply removed ultrasnow and installed Purple after jailbreaking with purplerain rc2!!!

I think the current running battle with the Dev Team guys is pretty healthy and it's really benefiting the community - but worrying about having both your ideas "stolen" seems counter productive, surely it means you've out-innovated and it's a sign of winning the round? :)

did not work.. used ultra instead and worked perfectly and gave me a signal in just a few seconds after reboot

I've heard nothing about firmware 3.1 and am curious if this new method would've been patched regardless?

What I did different is to:
Turn off Wifi
Reboot
Uninstall yellowsnow that got installed when I started Cydia and chose complete upgrade.
Rebbot
Added your source and it works great! No battery problems, full WiFi and full signal. Thanks!

@Scott uninstalling purplesn0w will delete the patches and the unlocked phone will turn back to locked AT&T Only phone.
@prostovanka just update on iTunes to 3.0 and use redsn0w to activate (unless purplera1n has an update?) and that will jailbreak it. then use ultrasn0w or purplesn0w to unlock.

@Bieu 3G speed WILL NEVER work with any of the iPhones available because of the different 3G frequencies. Maybe in the future after AT&T / Apple contract is up :P

We had updated another iPhone before using this method 2.2 but after jailbreaking and installing yellowsn02 we would get 1 signal bar but no carrier name and couldnt make phone calls. But here in the US one time i couldnt activate my iPhone due to no internet so i jailbroke it and then installed yellowsn0w later and got signal bars ect. But this method didnt work previous time when she tried in Malaysia. But maybe/hopefuly Ultrasn0w can work. I guess only thing i can do is Cross my fingers and press update.

I am reading both side’s explanations, Dev Team and GeoHot. I’m only a simpler user and i think Dev Team’s explanation that GeoHot’s 1MB memory exploit will eventually be corructed and crash the baseband coz memory is earmarked for specific use makes sense.
Both blogs is a mess with many problems raised, i think some problems are only fabricated by loyal dev team or geohot fans, sorry.

I tried to add source apt.geohot.com and cydia froze on the downloading screen. what can i do to restart it? every time i exit back out to homescreen and go back into cydia i still get the updating sources - downloading packages screen.

Purplesn0w does not hacktivate, afaik George's purplesn0w only unlocks already activated 3G S iPhones. Purplesn0w does not unlock 3G at all.

If you have a legitimately activated iPhone 3GS, which you have used redsn0w (from the Dev Team) to jailbreak, can you then use purplesnOw RC2 (from George) to unlock that phone instead of having to use the Dev Team's ultrasn0w unlock?
Or do you HAVE to have used purplera1n in the first place to jailbreak your 3GS in order to use purplesnOw to unlock?

Any jailbreak will work, you just need access to Cydia. If you have access to cydia, you're good to go.

I feel like hacktivation is an extremely important thing to support.. If it is legit activated, then what's the use for an unlock?
I'm not trying to be rude, but It seems to me that the main purpose for this would be to let people remove the internet plan after a month, which is fine, but how does that help t-mobile and others? You'd have to have a really nice person activate it for you first, I guess.
I am a big supporter of the dev team, so it was hard for me to accept when the jailbreak was released so haphazardly, which could endanger the future firmware generations. On the other hand, your work is good as well. I think rivalry is healthy, but maybe we should exercise some caution when it comes to sensitive information.
Though I have no use for it, good work on purplesn0w.
@Adrian any jailbreak software works with purplesn0w as long as you have cydia :)
I think i have found the solution for my battery issue.Push and location service are actually the two that run in the background and eat up my battery. Your jailbreak and unlock work super well and stably. Sorry for having blamed that on you.

Well I do not actually own or can own an iPhone 3G-S just for the fact that it costs 1500$ over here.
But I have a friend who tried both the Dev-Team tools and Geohot's tools and found out that on the Geohot(ed) one some kind of corruption is caused, which appears when he makes a call longer than 15 mins @ which point the Baseband reboots and cuts his call short, so he has to redial and talk every 15mins or so.
Whereas on the Dev-Team Unlocked 3G-S (He has 2), no such thing occurs. So 1 thing to say to you George, you are on the right path, but the dark side keeps is clouding your decisions. So please return to the Light-Side of things and do a better job.
I just wish you can work together with the Dev-Team to bring us better and more reliable tools, "United We Stand, Divided We Fall !"

Some are having success with purplesn0w while some are having success with ultrasn0w/yellowsn0w. There is just no reason to say someone is better when its pretty much the same.

@PsyChoses and ill admit, i had failed trying a couple of times using ultrasn0w before they fixed the wifi issues and upgraded right after purplesn0w came out with their unlock solution. i highly recommend both solutions, it all depends on the user.

I bought a 3GS but will only get it in a few weeks (after OS3.1 will be released) so I won't be able to get my signed files from Apple most likely.
Assuming I don't upgrade to official apple releases before a proper JB is available am I still going to need them or are they needed just in case I'm doing something stupid?

So i got myself an activated 3GS. used it in the US a little, then came back to the middle east. UltraSn0w came out. So i took the redsn0w and ultrasn0w route.. Worked fine. Apart from the devere battery drain and Wifi issues. The next version of Ultrasn0w did solve the wifi issue, but not the battery issue all that much..
So i turned to PurpleSn0w.
Followed the instructions, uninstalled Ultra. rebooted, installed purpleSn0w. Waited for signal.. nothing!. NO SERVICE.
Tried rebooting.. still nothing..
so i installed Ultra again.. got signal immediately...
Hmm.. battery started at 100%.. and its down to 70?? (the whole uninsall/install procedure) already.. what the hell!...
So i desperately need to install Purple.. but cant seem to get it to work... Any idea whats going on guys???
Waiting for a 1 Click Jailbreak solution for iPhone 3GS!

One of the main issues faced by blind iPhone owners in is that Cydia does not currently work with Apple's VoiceOver screen reader. I'm wondering if it's possible to install Purplesn0w without using Cydia? Assuming dependencies aren't updated, couldn't diskaid or other utilities be used to write Purplesn0w's files to the correct places?

I restored my 3GS and setup as new iphone with itune than JB with Make it Rain and installed Purplesn0w RC2 and every thing went smooth but as soon as I pressed Maps and was asked to set the location
than I started loosing signal.
I turned my location service to off and every this is smooth

I will admit that I was angry about purplerain at first because I used dev-team stuff so much. Anyway, my point is that I have compared the two and purplerain really seems to work better. Sorry for the past complaints and nice work!

Has any 1 had an issue with Voice Mail or phone app? on my 3G S phone app keeps crashing and no i dont have kate installed i didnt install anything new it just stoped working and on other 3G S voicemail stopped working and on regular 3G voicemail stopped working..

The story: I have an activated iphone 3gs, which I jailbreaked using redsn0w. Ultrasn0w worked OK, but I loose the signal at times. To give purplesn0w a try, I uninstalled ultrasn0w and installed purplesn0w (using cydia). Now, I get only one bar of reception and no carrier name and later NO SERVICE. Wifi works fine, but the unlocking seems to have failed.
Anybody else knows whether purplesn0w works with redsn0w and has actually tried it?

I will buy an AT&T Iphone 3GS in USA to use on Brazil. To make sure that everything will works, I'll put here what I'll do, with some questions.
1º: Activate Iphone on AT&T (How can I do that?)
2º: Install Purplera1nRC2 (I have to install purplerainRC2 with the AT&T sim card on the phone? Purplera1nRC2 comes with cydia? If not, how can I instal Cydia?)
3º: Install Purplesn0wRC2. (How can I do it? I have to use some program like cydia to install? And before install the purplesn0wRC2 version, I have to install the "purplesn0w first version"?)
So please, if somebody could help me, I'll really appreciate that.

Forgot to mention, when using ultrasn0w I get the "successful" message after entering the PIN. Using purplesn0w the PIN screen just disappears w/o the message and then only the one signal bar and later "no service"

I jailbroke with redsn0w, unlocked with purplesn0w, and to boot my iphone 3gs now takes more than a minute, so I reflashed the iphone back to original 3.0 and it still takes forever, how do i COMPLETELY remove purplesn0w and all of it's files so my 3gs is like store bought brand new??
purplesn0w doesn't work on redsn0w. I didn't ldid the binaries, and redsn0w is missing a kernel patch. If you try to install on a redsn0wed phone, it will do nothing.

I appreciate the effort though, I'll try it again, but first I'd like to completely remove purplesn0w, I've now reflashed the phone with the original 3.0 OS twice, and it's still slow to boot up.

you cant use sprint, iphone only works for GSM phones, like T-Mobile, ATT, and maybe some others, but sprint is CDMA and doesnt use a SIM card..
I think there might be a bug. When I jailbreak my 3GS everything works fine until i try to add more things like music, video's, ringtones etc. Has anyone else encountered this? If not, what am i doing wrong?

So I jailbroke my 3GS and worked perfectly. But now, when i try and add new songs or ringtones or videos, it will not sync to my iphone. When I restore it again all of that stuff will sync to iphone but not when i jailbreak with purplera1n. Has anyone else encounted this? I know I am doing everything right.
