Wifi fails? Battery fails? Unlock fails? You need purplesn0w, the geohot 3GS unlock solution. Now I know you here a lot about different colors of sn0w, but I'm here to tell you why purplesn0w is the best. First off, what is purplesn0w? It's a soft unlock for your 3GS that I'd actually use day to day. It's not a daemon that takes any resources, and it doesn't add a task to your baseband. It's very close to a true unlock. All it does is patch three files, CommCenter, lockdownd, and your wildcard activation plist(which you need, activate w at&t sim first, no hacktivation support yet). That's it, no other files are installed. Props to Oranav for the at+xlog exploit!
A full explanation is coming soon, but I think you clever reversers out there will see what it does, and see why it's so pristine :-) The payload is radically different from other varieties of sn0w. beta as usual, back up first.

sorry to say geohot, but this is fail on my 3GS Tmobile.. and yes i have 3G turned off. I activated with an old ATT sim..I reset network settings... all that jazz.
Only thing I can think of is that I used redsn0w to jailbreak, instead of purplera1n... is that what makes the difference?

@GeoHotz What exactly would you sugest to learn how to deveop this kind of stuff. I want to start looking for other holes in stuff like iBoot and iBSS and stuff for the next big Jailbreak exploit. Where should i start. I've looked all through the iphonewiki but need more indepth stuff.

@jirjen, activate before running, don't deactivate. if you activate post purplesn0w, it'll crash. will be fixed in RC2
@reznor9 i'm not convinced it won't save battery...try it. and it only worked on purplera1n RC2 devices, stupid codesing.

3GS: Tried it with at&t sim while on 2g network. Major fail with 3G enabled (ultrasn0w handles this situation), worked fine with network reset and 3g disabled. Currently using RC2 JB.
installed it using purplera1n. seemed to work but after reboot it askes me to enter unlock code again and again. i can enter it but after a few seconds it asks again....
help!

Unfortunately it didn't unlock my 3GS on purplera1n mac after uninstalling ultrasn0w.
So I did a fresh restore from DFU mode, activated with a legit sim, jailbroke with purplera1n for mac and installed purplesn0w and still it does not find any signal and there is no Carrier sub-menu in Settings.
So for now this unlock is not usable.
Oh now I now what is wrong with purplesn0w: you tested it only with 3G disabled. It does not work with 3G enabled, even if the network offers it (I'm on Orange in Romania).
After my last comment I decided to give purplesn0w one more try so I uninstalled it from Cydia, rebooted and installed it again. Before rebooting I turned off 3G. And, boom :) it worked!
But then I turned on 3G and it stopped working. No signal, no bluetooth, no Carrier setting. I had to turn 3G off and reboot again to make it work.
So I guess you need to fix the 3G part -- which is kind of difficult as you live in the US. If I can be of any assistance from here please let me know. I'll stay on purplesn0w for a couple of days even if it means using Edge instead of 3G.

Sorry, purplesn0w did not work for me.
I ended up restoring my 3GS and installed purplera1n RC1, then purplesn0w. Nothing, I could not get connected to AT&T.
I tried many re-boots in between.
Finally uninstalled purplera1n and installed ultrasn0w, immediately got connected to AT&T.
Yeah, to confirm what other users have said, this unlock fails to function with 3G enabled, even on network providers that offer 3G.
On ultrasn0w I managed to get a decent signal + 3g access to UK t-mobile.
After installing purplesn0w i had no signal and wifi was dropping every 10 seconds. Disabling 3G via SBSettings immedietly fixes both problems. Turning it on again immedietly causes both problems to return.
So at present this unlock just doesn't function with 3G.
I look forward to a fix, as ultrasn0w has it's own problems.
@geohotz. 3Gs jailbroken with purplera1n and unlocked with purplesnow. It looses the signal when the iPhone is turned off and back on. No Bluetooth and very very slow. Can anyone else confirm please.

This doesn't work for me at all. Trying it on a fresh purplera1n JB. Soon as i installed sn0w, the phone started crawling - really really slow. Unable to pick up any network signal
Done it, rebooted it but now my iphone is stuck on the apple sign, can't turn it off, can't go in recovery mode, what should I do ?
@Matt, you need to restore you iPhone in DFU..
Connect iPhone to USB. Turn on iTunes. Hold both home and power button for 10 seconds, release only power button and keep holding the home button until iTunes reacts... restore

After a restore and set up as a new phone I re jailbroke with purplera1n. Works great definitely better signal and wifi then ultrasn0w but still huge battery drainage
I have a unusual way to activate my iPhone.
My iPhone is a 3GS locked on SFR French Carrier. My plan will start on augutst 1st. I have a plan with Orange and Iwant to put my Orange sim card into m 3GS until the end of my plan.
I use my Orange simcard using this method :
- Restore with SFR sim
(Waiting for activation message)
- Jailbreak with sfr sim
(Waiting for activation message)
- Instllation of ultrasn0w
- Sim swicth
- Synchronisation with Orange Sim
(IPhone activated messgae.)
I assume that ultrasn0w is installed. But I can't swicht from ultrasn0w to purlplesn0w. But my iPhone is not "hacktivated".
I don't know why it dosen't work.

George it did not work for me. The jailbreak was fine. Cydia installed, have 3G and Wifi. The minute I unlocked it however (I am on AT&T), no service, network reset does not work and can't get into Cydia to uninstall it...

Ah, ok. My phone is an any carrier phone (officially unlocked at Apple) from Belgium. I have neither ultrasn0w or purplesn0w... no need (just watching the hacking efforts) but I have the wifi dropping problem with just the Jailbreak.
Turning off 3G fixes it. Perhaps the wifi issue is not related to unlock.

Another one here that it didn't work for. Had a 2G signal and all was fine but the moment it switched to 3G (I'm in a patchy area) I lost all cell reception, the phone became VERY sluggish and slow to respond to any user input. I opened Cydia to remove Purplesn0w but without a signal it just crashed.
A few forced reboots later and I managed to regain cell reception, removed Purplesn0w and my 3GS is working fine again so reinstalled ultrasn0w.
I do hope you can iron out these bugs. Your purplera1n jailbreak is far better than the Dev Teams so I do hope that you can get sn0w working just as well.

Let me start off by saying nice work. It's always a good idea to keep improving on existing products. But really, in my opinion Dev-Team have done an excellent job at developing the unlock and also trying to keep it a secret from Apple. After all, is it wasn't for the help of the community no unlock would have ever been possible. So I believe that it would be better to not disclose any more information that could lead Apple to close all few loopholes left.

had ultrasnow worked. But somehow, it crashed, and tried to install it again but seems something is wrong with it, coz tried it so many times, keep on receiving msg that the repo is no found or invalid even though i wrote the repo correctly.
And i read about purplesnow. so i did all, installed completely, but doesnt seem to unlock coz it only works with the current sim, no signal with another sim.
