Yes, this is what you've all been waiting for. A jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS. And it's awesome. To get started right now, go to purplera1n.com. Download it. Make sure you have windows(but not 7), the latest iTunes installed, and an iPhone 3GS with 3.0 firmware. Connect your iPhone normally. Click "make it ra1n". Wait. On bootup, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app. Hopefully you'll figure out what to do from there. Best tutorial gets linked to from purplera1n site. This tool is beta. Make sure to have everything backed up before running. Also if Cydia doesn't show up after running Freeze, reboot.
If you need help email purplera1n.support at gmail and attach your purplera1n.log file. Or call the purplera1n support hotline @ (650) 265-1210 Mac version is coming shortly.
Normally I don't make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn't how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn't worth waiting because you might have the "last" hole in the iPhone. What last hole...this isn't golf. I'll find a new one next week. Also your purplera1nyday files ensure that you can always get back to a jailbroken state, so if you have it it's just a matter of tools.
Props to chronic dev for their help, and to kroo for writing v2 of Freeze. And props to Saurik for making an awesome package set. Note the binary size of purplera1n, it's smaller than C++ hello world. No 20MB thing that needs to be torrented. And no IPSW to download. This is how jailbreak should be!

Great news! But it's not working on either of my two Windows XP 32-bit laptops. Maybe a language problem? (My Windows is german). Will try Windows XP 64-bit english version now.
for those with vista just run it with windows xp compatibility enabled under the properties tab :)
it works on xp. if all you have is vista try running it in compatibility mode... but my guess is just find an xp machine because it will work on that.

Didn't know that iTunes apparently doesn't support Windows XP 64-bit edition. Too bad. So the jailbreak is still not working for me, crashed immediately after I clicked the button. On one laptop the last entry in the log file said "button clicked", on the other, the log was empty.

ok huge problem i installed winterboard an the iphone crashed and then went into safe mode it is now frozen
Worked!
First time I tried it, I didn't have iTunes open, and it got stuck at the purplera1n image.
Forced reboot with holding Home/Power and ran it with iTunes open and this time it ran and automatically rebooted with Freeze in the list of applications.
Ran Freeze, downloaded Cydia. Got stuck...closed it, reopened it, then it installed it. Exited Freeze, but it wasn't in the list of applications...so I rebooted and bam, Cydia showed up.

Well, I don't think hard-coding the path to iTunesMobileDevice.dll as "C:\Program Files\.." will help compatibility on x64 and non-English Windows versions.. That's more of an alpha, not beta code quality.
(Still pissed this doesn't run on Win7 x64)

Im on XP Pro 32 bit - Started Itunes - Ran purplerain file, says done, wait for reboot, pic of george on iphone, and dialog box in itunes says iphone is in recovery mode. How long should I wait? Or do I need to click the OK box in itunes? Thanks.
My phone got stuck on the restore screen waiting to reboot. gave it 15mins then manually rebooted it. now its hanging on restore screen but restore fails even under dfu.

FYI: I installed using Windows XP via VMware Fusion. I can tell you it works, but I needed to manually reboot the iPhone after it entered recovery mode. This may be the way VMware Fusion handles USB devices.
I won't recommend this method, but it does work. If you are not confident, just wait for a Mac version or use a real Windows PC or Boot Camp.
So once it says "done, wait for reboot" Do i continue to wait, or do I click shift+restore and open "iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore."
It would be great to have more details on what we are supposed to do after having clicked on make it rain.
It appears some have to manually reboot, others don't.

• 2. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes (8.2) OPEN and firmware 3.0 (normally it's good) on your iPhone 3GS
• 3. Connect your device to your computer (XP or Vista, not 7 or 64-bit version)
• 4. Start Purplera1n and click the "make it ra1n" (roughly: jailbreak!)
• 5. Wait (follow instructions)
• 6. Restart the iPhone 3GS
• 7. Open the icon "freeze", then install Cydia (restart if you have any concerns)

To remove Freeze.app and it's icon, use any iPhone Disk program such as DiskAid, iPhoneDrive, etc... Delete Freeze.App located in /Applications. Reboot.
"Wait for Reboot" 17 minutes and counting. Keep waiting?

Well.. I tried to exec the purplera1n file on vista 32 bit. Got stuck in recovery mode.. Any help? Can't get out of it
So purplera1n still just closes when I press "make it rain"

I had to run purplera1n twice. First time, it got stuck on recovery screen, waiting for reboot. Held home+power and iphone rebooted back to recovery mode. Ran purplera1n again and this time saw the image :) Waited again and it rebooted by itself this time. Freeze appeared :)
Let's hope the rest of the process will go well.

Guys, first off after hitting "Make it Ra1n" it just got stuck on the purplera1n image on the iphone, so I manually rebooted it, and there was no "Freeze" app. So I'm running the jailbreak again, this time the phone is displaying the "Itunes < USB" image on it, and purplera1n is just stating "Running"
How long were you guys waiting for, before it finished? Ten minutes plus, does this mean a crash? What do I do?

I do not have the SIM from AT&T (and I don't live in the US), so can I use this jailbreak even though my iPhone 3GS is not even Activated?
I've tried but it keeps asking me to insert a valid SIM to activate first...

Update: every 5-7 mins it will suddenly say "Done! wait for reboot" then the phone goes black for a second, then straight back into the "USB itunes logo" screen, and I sit staring at "Running" on purplera1n again. Seriously, any suggestions? I don't want to pull out the cable or anything incase I brick the phone

Third update: Disconnected, and the phone would only boot into recovery mode. Running a recovery now, with my previously downloaded 3.0 firmware installer. Will report back here after attempting the jailbreak again.

Maybe it's not compatible with 3GS?
Try restoring your 3GS backto 3.0 and jailbreak again. If the problem still persists, then come back and ask.
I use my iPhone with my Mac. If I use my XP laptop to jailbreak, can I then sync with my mac to get my apps back, or do I need to start again?

WIFI unstable after purplera1n?
am i the only one with the issue that WIFI seems unstable after purplerain and ultrasnow? Looses signal every 30 seconds or so :(
Now here's a problem. Can't seem to SSH into my 3GS.
Putty connects, but when I try to login, it says code signature failed for /usr/lib/libreadline and 2 other .dylib files.
ok, I had to do the rain about 5 times before it finally rebooted. I can finally say I can now install Cydia.
So at first it don't succeed, try and try again.

OK HERE'S HOW TO CONNECT SSH THRU WIFI...I GOT IT AFTER 2 OR 3 ATTEMPS...GET YOUR IP ADDRESS.. CREATE A NEW SESSION.. PRETTY MUCH THE USUAL... root then alpine..but now how i got it to work, theres a drop box underneath called file protocol and instead of using to SFTP to log in i used SCP and got it to work let me know if it worked for you
This might help a little i also has a trouble time getting to work..
1) have itunes open
2)run purplera1n
3)press "make it ra1n"
4) wait for it to get into recovery mode
5)now for some reason it might stay at recovery mode while the program saying done, wait for reboot
6)wait a minute if nothing happens leave the iphone alone dont try to maunally reboot it
7)close the purplera1n program and re-run it all over again while the phone is still in recovery mode
8)it should now work
9) you should see the picture from the website purplera1n (where you downloaded the program)
10)bam it should reboot by it self with the app freeze in the sspringboard
11)run freeze..install cydia
12)if it doesn't show. reboot iphone
13)after reboot it should now be on the springboard

I noticed the dylib code signature error when I installed SBSettings as well. It rebooted and works though.
now can someone figure out why winterboard sends my phone into safe mode...Maybe mobile subtrate??? and if so how to get around this???
Was unable to restore after purplera1n reboot crash. Even DFU failed giving error 3014
I rebooted pc then tried dfu restore again. This brought the phone back and purplera1n worked fine after that. Very chuffed, appsync and all the oddies that come with it work fine btw.

This is what I recieve in log and when I do recovery with app running in background get an error in itunes 'The phone iphone cannot be restored. An unkown error occurred (3004)'. Until i shut down the jailbreak app it will continue with this error. Any help much appreciated. Legend for getting this out so quick.
Winterboard also crashes for me too, only comes up in safe mode (after I hold down the power button on the top (of my 3gs).

Worked for me under Windows 7 32-bit, but I had to run it twice. The first time, the phone rebooted into recovery mode. I restarted the phone into recovery mode and re-ran purplera1n. This time, I saw the image, the phone rebooted, and I was able to run Freeze.app

Ultrasn0W does work but its a bit flakey. It took me 3 reboots before it seemed to work. Looks like a timing issue. On a 3G if you go to airplane mode and off, the signal comes back. On the 3GS it gets stuck at invalid SIM. I am sure this is something that will be rectified in time. But for now, I have got it working on T-mobile UK
Please anybody, what can I do if Iphone 3gs is not activated and I have no AT&T Sim (outside US)?
I am randomly getting "No Sim" with T-Mobile USA using Ultrasn0w.

I just used the jailbreak! thanks so much and i guess the dev team will have to release there jailbreak now too haha no point in keeping it to themselves as apple can checkout your jailbreak for the hole they where all talking bout etc.. with jailbreaking. hehe thanks and keep on with that hacking thing you do lol.. see ya!

antonio: I'm having the same issue. Even after my restore, I do the jailbreak, same thing happens, just stuck on the "Itunes < USB" logo. It may need another restore. Why on earth is it doing this? same firmware, same OS as everyone else, same itunes, same program, same model iphone! what could possibly make it do this after a FRESH restore?!

I was reading Windows 7 will not work. Did any one try compatibility mode it will run as Visa SP1,2 XP SP1,2,3 also 95,98,ME,NT 4.0,2000,Server 2003.
Just right click PurpleRa1n then click compatibility
Also:UAC ON (Admin)

leave the iphone how it is in recovery mode close the purplera1n program and run it again and try it again hope it helps

After combinations of restarting the phone, opening and closing ra1n (I know, sounds really messy and dangerous) eventually it worked.

It crashes on XP SP2 French. I tried in DFU AND in normal mode, it crashes on clic on "Make it ra1n".

Does it work with unlocked iPhone 3GS? I purchased the phone in Australia apple store. I've tried running the purplera1n like 50 times and it still stuck on the recovery screen. I even restored the phone and tried again, still no luck
okay.. think i may of fixed the ultrasn0w problem...? when you finally get back in after one of the random ¨this sim is locked¨ moments go straight to plane mode - it will come up again that the sim is locked.. just leave it for a little while.. then do the unlock again.. wallah! the carrier and signal are back. woohoo

1. Quit purplea1n app
2. Unplug your device
3. Put it back
4. Rerun purplea1n
5."Make it rain"

listen people, when you click the purplera1n site, SAVE, dont just run it. SAVE the file to your desktop or something. and it will work from there, IM SOOO HAPPY!

I've done that as well. I've held both power and home and got it to turn off, but everytime, it comes back up in recovery mode. Whether i'm plugged into the laptop or not. Also, i've tried the compatability mode. Xp mode compatability running the program and it gets stuck waiting for iphone. so I'm back to no compatability because at least this way it goes to done, wait for reboot.
This is exactly how the game should be played. I like that.
