I don't see it happening anytime soon.
The old exploits aren't there anymore. The hope would be finding an exploit in the new baseband code itself to run a large chunk of code. But I think the bootloader is pretty well locked down.
First of all, downgrading the bootloader from software is out of the question. The bootrom exploit runs before the current bootloader, so it can access the bootloader. But when the bootloader boots, it locks down its sections of flash. So after the bootloader runs, the bootloader can't be touched.
Secondly, the only secpack that validates on 4.6 is >= 1.1.3 They made a change to the format of the secpack so the older ones don't validate. So if we looked for an exploit in the baseband itself, it would have to be on post 1.1.2
Firmware is written as it is uploaded, and this is what IPSF and AnySim take advantage of. The old bootloader just relied on waiting for the sig to verify before writing the first 0x400 bytes, which contain the start vector. The new bootloader also needs the "secpack" in 0x3c0000 to not verify. So we would have to find an exploit which can write the first 0x400 and erase 0x3c0000.
The IPSF unlock itself uses an RSA hack in bootloader 3.9 This has been thoroughly patched in 4.6
Also even if we found a way to brute force the NCK's in reasonable time, we can't get the information to do the brute force off 4.6 The only hope here is to find the Apple algorithm used to generate the NCK. I don't think this is possible, unless we have a spy in Apple :)
I hope I am wrong, and some clever person will come along with a software unlock.

Is it possible to replace the Apple Public Key on the phone through a hardware unlock? Since we know that the NCK needs to be verified against the key on the iPhone (right?), won't replacing the RSA key make generating a NCK easy?

I think GEOHOTZ is right. the fact is you cannot keep having a software unlock consistently. Think about it, apple works on each potential flaw in their software to prevent any unlocks, so i just think they finally got it right now.This is the longest we have ever waited for a software unlock. I just think the hackers have been stopped in their tracks this time.

@ andreas - I'm fairly new at iPhone hacking, but unless I've misunderstood the situation, it's the whole signed code issue that's the problem. There's not much longevity in software hacks because, unfortunately for us, apple will close the holes over time.

If you mess up by upgrading to 1.1.3 I used Ibrick and let me go back to 1.0.2 it was not let it me do it as normal using Itunes good stuff.

Have independant pieces of software that starts randomly (statistically every part should be tried) and periodically saves where they are (so that it can be restarted). the software alerts the user if he finds the key and gives a signature that authentifies the key was found by the soft. The soft reports the key on the dev team forum with the signature.

1) According to your post, due to the firmware secpack checking, it would only be possible to find an exploit in the baseband with firmware after 1.1.3. Why isnt it possible to do it AFTER upgrading to 1.1.3 (but keeping the bootloader)?

To me, the main objection is still number one, the fact that the bootloader locks the bootrom. Isnt it so?

If it is a question of some algorithm that needs reverse engineering or an encryption key that needs to be discovered then let me suggest that you post the problem in isolated form.
For example, my ex-office-mate's research focuses on breaking crypto algorithms and he would probably like to work on this type of problem. But he has no interest (and also not the skills) to hack on the iPhone itself.
If you posted something like "here is a signed piece of code, here is the algorithm used to check the signature, we think the algorithm used to sign it is this, we need to be able to sign our own code." Then that breaks the problem into a form that is more addressable by people that don't even have an iPhone.

There is no Software unlock available for 1.1.2FW The only way u can unlock it, is with a ***SIM. I recommend StealthSIM.

I bought an 1.1.1 phone in oktober but friends of mine bought one in november and december to be happy with xmas, but they where kept dry for too long. i didnt really get through your way of doing it (NOR dumb and stuff) but i found a very nice noobtutorial on http://iphone.unlock.no
the first phone i opened got bend and i did something wrong (i executed the code over wifi and lost it while using ienew), got panic and restored to 1.1.3 to see if it would still work (it does but now that one has to wait).. the other 4 phones didnt get a scratch (except on that one place ;) and are running the 3.9 bootloader everyone is happy.

a software unlock is not as exiting as the hardwareunlock. as you said george, i also thought that phone got bricked... but everytime i restored it and saw that IME number.. i was very very happy ;]

George, i need help with something... a friend of mine, have an iPhone that the camera didn't work... but i know that is not a hardware problem... when you try to access to the camera, a message appears and it says: "There is not enough room to take additional pictures. Please delete some existing photos." but there aren't photos on it... i dont know waht to do...
@s3bs: maybe your friend installed too many programms. try to uninstall some of them .. if that solves the problem you should make an symbolic link from your /applications folder to /private/var/root/applications and put your apps in there ..

here is the way to fix. downgrade the Iphone to 1.0.2
you can do it with an 1.1.2 otb if you have no baseband. jailbreak via ibrickr (in the package).
use ibrickr to install BSD,Terminal,mobile finder and all the files from 112otb hardware unlock
in my pack to var/usr/bin.
only one file then the next file and next.... not all at the same time becouse it dont work
after anstall all go to mobile finder and search for the files in usr/bin.you can change the Attributes in mobile finder. all files you copy from 112otb hardware unlock to Iphone var/usr/bin (read,write,exec,) finish.
go to terminal. cd /usr/bin return
and than try iunew like sleep ;15 iunew return contact the testpoint s if all worked comes a text ( tespoint workt 55 wait some time. a text will come press a char and return (do it) wait some time and finish you have bootloader 3.9. update to 1.1.2 than downgrade to 1.1.1 jailbreak install oktoprep. update to 1.1.2 use jailbreake 1.1.2 in the pack. install anysim 1.2u

The version check reads from 0xA0021000 and 0xA0021004 to get the version of the main firmware. It then compares the values [0xA0021000]==~[0xA0021004]. If that check fails it ignores the version check. It is also the only bootloader access into high flash. So when A16 goes high, pull any data line high or low. That will cause the check to fail, and hence the version check to be skipped. And they shouldn’t be any memory accesses in the bootloader, so it’ll be fine.
Software:
This exploit is in the the way the secpack signature is padded. They did a lot to remove the really bad signature checking of the old bootloader that IPSF exploited. Although the secpack still has 0×28 bytes of data at the end that isn’t checked for normal secpack sigs. The secpack sig is(0×30 header/padding, 0×14 main fw sha, 0×14 secpack sha, 0×28 unchecked padding) So by spoofing the first 0×58 of the RSA, you can set any secpack and main fw sha hash you want. It is very easy in exponent 3 RSA cryptosystems to spoof the first 1/3 of the message bytes. I believe with some clever math and brute force, the whole 0×58 can be spoofed. Any cryptology experts out there?

أنَّى اتجهتَ للإسـلام في بـلـدٍ * تجْده كالطيرِ مقصـوصًا جناحـاه
كـم صرفتنا يـدٌ كنـا نـصرفها * وبات يـملكنا شعب مـلكناه
بالله سل خلف بحر الروم عن عرب * بالأمس كانوا هنا واليوم قد تاهوا
