The Phone is for sale

eBay Auction

This is the phone that was unlocked live here this morning. It includes the phone, the worlds first serial dock, and the official unlock switch from the blog.

As a note, if you are only bidding on this to get an unlocked iPhone, don't. There are much cheaper and easier ways to get one. This is a piece of cell phone history. I have no intention of ever starting an unlocking service.

I have attempted to fix the auction. It is very hard to deal with the people at ebay. I may be reposting the auction if ebay can't solve this problem.

“That’s exactly, like, what I don’t want,” Hotz said. “I don’t want people making money off this.”

Shouldn't have published it if you didn't want it to be turned into another capitalist tool. Opportunists are everywhere, just waiting for someone else to do the work so they can make easy money without actually having any useful skills themselves. But then I guess a lack of conscience IS a useful skill nowadays...

Congrats, I just hope that the current slew of bids don't back out. Unfortunately I can see people just running the price up to screw with you and legit bidders.

Also, its funny that a company (I will not post the link here, but check engadget), has apparently found a pure software unlock, but are selling it, a day after you made yours public. Personally, I think you should have copyrighted your instruction set, and then released it, that way people trying to make money off your hard work would get screwed, or atleast have to pay you for its use :)

It doesn't matter if apple buys the phone because the information on how to unlock the phone is in the public domain and the actions can be replicated, if not by geo, then by someone else with the technical skills that geo has advised necessary. Therefore, if Apple wins the all they own is the 3nd unlock iPhone, but not the 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc.

Copyright? I don't think so. A copyright would protect the document (blog page) itself, not the method. Methods are covered by patents. However, it is doubtful that this would be patentable.

I think you should have worked with Apple on this after your patent. If it is legal to modify the iPhone then I guess you could have some money coming your way but, I think Apple has some pretty smart people and legal people working for them and I have a feeling they put this "block" on the phone for a reason.

There's some talk on here about protecting what you did & monetizing it. As was correctly stated by a previous poster, the correct method of protection for this is patent. However, the previous poster was potentially wrong in stating that this is not protectable. You likely still have time to file for patent protection in the US. If you'd like us to look into this for you, we can. (http:www.coloradoiplaw.com). You can see our blog at (http://www.lld-law.com/IPblog.html).

This is not true in this country (it is true in most other countries). The inventor has 1 year from the time the invention is published or sold to file for their patent. Assuming it is otherwise patentable he has 1 year before this blog completely blocks patentability.

However, he clearly is an OS kind of person, and OS people rarely file for patents.

Great work! another step forward for US consumers who are tired of being cornered into product services they either don't want or disabling product services they should be entitled to as a result of their original purchase. As your next project, can you take on Verizon - who treat their customers like dirt - figure out and post how to enable non-cellular transfers for the Razor phones? Contrary to some blog postings, Verizon retailers do not provide a patch to correct this issue. This would be a great message to send that company. I would think that Apple would profit from an unlocked phone. The fact that it was locked to AT&T is why sales were hindered. I think AT&T would be more likely to file a lawsuit, because they are on the losing end of this. If anything, I think people should be buying Apple stock after this hack.

I sent you a note through ebay...check out bidder 31's information. Brand new, no feedback at all...I'd be supicious. - Eric

I wouldn't give you ten dollars for that hacked up piece of shit. Good luck getting anyone to play you more than retail.

According to the news story on Yahoo: There is apparently no U.S. law against unlocking cell phones. Last year, the Library of Congress specifically excluded cell-phone unlocking from coverage under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Among other things, the law has been used to prosecute people who modify game consoles to play a wider variety of games.

Way to stick it to two bullshit companies!

Not to take away from your accomplishment but it's just a phone, people.

The bigger idea is that if you are greedy (Apple) and sells to the public garbage (AT&T). Things like this will happen.

Easy on the Redbulls and AMPs, there were no reasons to rush this, but I know it must have felt good!

Grats on the amount of money you'll be getting for spending that summer having fun with the iphone :). Six days left on the auction, and in the last three minutes it went from $21,300...to $33,100. Have fun at college :)

The said...

WOW it's up to $35,000 and still 6 days left in auction! CONGRATS!
And a word to the wise...with the kind of press you're getting and also that when this auction hits $100k, you're gonna be chased by the press again...AND maybe Red Bull will feature you in a commercial? You might want to rethink posting that picture...currently it's free advertising, maybe hire an agent to contact them and see if you can make a deal.

Since Forbes.com published the news about your unlocked iPhone like an hour ago. The eBay auction jumped from $20,000 to more than 1,500,000.00 in less than 42 minutes.

If the product "piece of History" is sold you are some lucky dude!

maybe you can send me a couple thousands just because... ;-) good luck!

Ben Steele said...

Just kidding, 2million. Don't have a heart attack. Haha, see you in 6 days, on the news again.

I heard about you on Yahoo News! Great job. That is awesome!

I bet AT&T is going to throw a shit fit. Too bad you weren't able to figure this out when people had to wait forever for their phones to work (not that that could be possible, but it would have been hilarious!)

Hi geohot.

Congratulations. It seems possible that you are very nearly a millionaire. I've watched your iPhone auction jump from an already impressive $19,500 to an absolutely astounding five and a half million dollars.

Once again, congratulations. Enjoy college!

Dude, you're hella rich now. Can you post a funny reply to my cheeseburger question and make it public? That would rock. Great hacking, btw. I've only used JTAG for de-bricking Linksys routers, but it's certainly the shiz.
