THE iPhone HAS BEEN TRADED

Terry Daidone, the founder of Certicell contacted me this morning, and offered to make a trade for the iPhone. I traded it for a sweet Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones. I will be sending the iPhones, unlocked if they wish, to jpetrie(the first donater), gray(the reversing genius), and iProof(who is truly amazing at finding stuff online) Thanks a lot everyone. I leave for college tomorrow, and this has been a great end to a great summer. If I ever do anything more with the iPhone, it'll definitely be posted here. Also I contacted iphonesimfree and offered to verify on this blog their claims of a software unlock. No response yet...

Hey man! Congrats on your car.. I must however say that I disagree with your decision. I know you don't care about money, I didn't really understand money when I was your age either, but with the money that some pople were willing to offer, you could have bought 3 Nissan 350 Zs. And If any of the really high bids were legit, you could have bought your whole team cars. I think this was really bad decision making. On top of that... why are you in such a hurry? school doesn't start until monday, and it's not like you're gona be so bogged down there that you can't still email people and sell stuff. I just started school too and I still have so much free time on my hands that I resorted to going back to world of warcraft. and I'm taking 15 credits!! I really hope you reconsider... the chance to get your whole team cars is enough to make the current decision VERY selfish.

Good luck and great year in college. You're terrific.

Congrats! That sounds very nice. Good luck!

on top of that... if you don't get any money out of it and just get a car... how thrilled do you think your parents will be when they have to pay your insurance. You should REALLY think this through.

I think the young man made a very good decision about trading the iphone.
He and his team knew what they wanted and went for it, they are not in it for the money as some young people are. He now has what he wanted and his team each has an Iphone to use the way they see fit. This young man will be going places when he finishes college because he knows what he wants and has the go-gettiveness to do it.
Good luck on your schooling.

Good move asking for more iPhones. Increase your sales exponentially. Everyone who bidded for the first iphone is going to want one too.

I understand that not everything is about money. I personally dislike money myself... But I feel like I just watched him throw away a million dollars. It's painful to see that. I'm not a greedy person, and I understand as well as the next guy, if not better, about these things. But you are selling an artifact. You have a 5+ man team backing you up. If you had taken the million dollars... assuming it was legit, you could have purchased your whole team cars, or even a house! I know people want to be supportive, but honestly, HONESTLY, I don't think it was the best decision. you should really speak to a financial advisor, or economic expert, or SOMETHING.. You could have gotten so much more out of this.

Come on dude, This guy is a teen that can afford a 600 dollar phone and take it apart for fun, what makes you think that his college isn't already paid for? or that his parent's couldn't afford the insurance, dude sometimes it's not all about the money.

Way to go George keep im on thier toes, What's your Major?

Jath said...

I know its not all about the money... The point I'm trying to make is its all about his team.........

His team... Who he couldn't have done it without.

Seriously... I think he's being selfish. He could get them all something for the work they put into it too.

I'm happy for him, I really am... But I really think he hasn't thought this through. He's a tech GURU. but just because your a genious in one thing, doesn't mean you know everything about money.

I'm not flaming... I'm just trying to get him to REALLY think about his decision hard, and to get some expert advice.

I understand where jarth's coming from. A great new car can be a hassle if you don't have the liquid cash for insurance and maintenance. That's why many people who win cars end up selling them. It's not really "free", and there are so many non-car expenses in GH's life right now. But if this is how he wants things, then I'm happy for him. I love how much coverage this is getting; it's got to be embarrassing for the Apple fortress, and it can only be good for free enterprise, even if no one looks to profit from it (surely some will, but hopefully consumers will know what choices they have).

Frankly, the whole iPhone craze perplexes me. My husband's phone (thru T-Mobile) does much more and he's had it for well over a year.

Well done! Don't worry about the costs associated with the car you've just earned -- with your entrepreneurial skills, you will easily be able to afford everything associated with it and more. Now if you could only find a way for me to mute my neighbor's television with my cell phone!

barnett, I've been able to mute my neighbor's TV and stereo with my cell phone. I used it to call local police about the noise. Repeatedly. Now I have new, quiet neighbors. [They were stupid partypartyparty Pepperdine "students" - quotes because I don't think they ever put down the bong long enough to go to class. LOL)

Back to GH - I'm still thrilled for you, and wish you all the best luck in any endeavor you take on.

Jim & Shay said...

Jath's points are valid - I'm not hugely materialistic either, but money DOES make the world go round.

Whether it's for himself, his parents, his collaborators or a favorite charity, there was a unique opportunity here that seems to have evaporated.

George has some great entrepreneurial skills. To develop those skills and convert them into something worthwhile takes moeny - generally lot's of it (I know, I've been there). Money isn't all about personal gain - it's the vehicle that opens up all sorts of opportunities.

Having said that, the past 36 hours has been a fun ride - I've enjoyed watching it unfold from the sidelines.

Activity Grrrl said...

Thanks, jath.

Jath said...

Well, if I looked at it this way... it makes more sense... but ONLY if you take action.

Your summer project got you some really cool stuff and TONS of publicity. You can now get a job with probably dozens of technology companies. You could do an internship type deal (so long as they pay you) or, what I would do... I'd freelance. Work as a tech mercenary, hacking Iphones and any other stuff companies ask you and your team to do. You'll be your own company. And you and your team can work from anywhere. However, one of the first things you need to do is hire a financial advisor and an advertising specialist. I'll be submitting my Resume to you as soon as I finish my ABUS... Maybe you'll let me intern with you?

On the DAY that I read PC magazine and the article states "I will be surprised if by the time you read this the IPhone hasn't been unlocked"... I am not even your Mom and I'm proud of you. I'm really proud that you did this and also that you are not greedy. On the other hand, I just hope you also have your college paid for or you get a full scholarship out of this. I KNOW what a hardship it is to pay for college for people. I have two sons in college and a stepdaughter who just got out, and people owe as much as a mortgage is and the loan is for as long... Hey, maybe you can figure out why our government isn't helping our youth out more financially so we can be competitive in the world? (and or why does college cost so much?)
Take care and God Bless. Good luck in college and DON'T party! (ok, that's the Mom in me, I can't help it)

You can also listen the sound files on line. I would like you to email me back your feedback to wwong@psychoacousticsolution.com

I'm being 100% honest when I tell you that you can have some incredible job offers after just 1 year. Don't get too caught up with trying to write book reports on James Joyce to realize that the real money will come from people that will teach stuff on the job.

I mean, you are in all your right to want to get paid for the soft unlock, but you could at least tell that you changed your mind and decided you needed the money or sth. either way I have an iphone ordered that would be coming to my country in a couple of weeks and I would be willing to pay for the unlock, so just let me know if you really have the soft unlock. :)

hi would like to make a few points for you to consider geohot,/george.You made a big assumption that my bid was not also legally binding on you.Sorry but my bid was legitimate. Not only that I saved the bid history and my bid was not cancelled until you concelled the whole auction.Your reson for cancelling the auction is not valid. You might say some of the bids were not legitimate but you cannot say they all weren't my bid stands. So where is my phone?
Sorry but the listing did not say anything about contacting you before I bid,i have positive feed back ,I even sent you emails encourageing you,and guess what I am now selling the print out of the bid history on ebay. The person you traded the phone to has no legal right to this phone, when you start an auction you are legally bound by the laws of auctions.i don't know who is counseling you but they are leading you astray.I will be contacting my attorney Monday to bring this whole matter into the courts, sorry but we were legitimate bidders you have amade a grave error in judgement.
Signed,

P.s. Geohot you were rich and you threw it away man, well I'm not going to let you do it,I am going to pursue this so you will gain the reward you deserve.I will be contacting the media as soon as I can and tell them this amazing story,Geo hot this is bigger than you much bigger than you think.Much bigger than all the watchers,it is about the ones who tried to win this phone in an legitimate auction.Hey my freind the bids were real.At least mine was that much I can say.We got a real problem going man.The law of auctions prevails over your actions and auctions are strictly governed by the law.
We will have to pursue this wisely my freind,I emailed you and I know you were to busy to respond, you might want to respond now.Take care best regards.

Your accomplishment brought tears to my eyes.
Your "deal", if anything, and I assume that you have some good advice, tells me that you have, to use an old fashioned phrase, good moral fiber.
IMHO you have, at a formative age, already demonstrated skills, dedication, leadership, ability to communicate clearly and cooperate with others, humility and at least a little business sense.
I have a skill set from a 1950's and 1960's NYC public school education which allows me to understand and do what you have published. The only reason I won't is that Iphones need to spend more time in the oven.
It saddens me that there are so many responses on your blog saying that this is SO complicated. If there were 100,000 high school graduates like yourself, then we, as a country, would not be on the road to the " Death Of A Thousand Cuts".
I wish you all the best and as we old farts used to say: "Don't lost lose the faith, baby"

If you think money is not everything, jsut wait a few years and you will see that you are wrong. Money is everything, with money you can live even longer, you will eat the best of the best, have private doctors and the best insurance money can buy, without mentioning the house, the cars, and the power over society, you are thinking like a poor guy and probably will stay poor, you are smart but at the same time you are not smart, with so much publicity nationwide, how could you just change for a car, you say you don't care about money, but you are wrong you care, that's why you got a car, MONEY IS EVERYTHING, with money you can get anything you want, without money you couldn't be attentding college like other guys, MONEY IS EVERYTHING, with money you can have in college your own room and study better, MONEY IS EVERYTHING, if people wouldn't donate money to you you wouldn't be famous now, MONEY IS and MEANS EVERYTHING, excep happiness and health "BUT" money still play an important role in this 2 aspects. With money you can buy the best food money can buy, and the best doctors you can get, that will make you happy. MONEY IS EVERYTHING.

This kicks ass! Why anyone would bother to invent such a cool gadget and then limit it's use is beyond me. Compare this to Skype technology...200+ million users and growing!
Back in the day, I loved to "hack" things like 8-track tapes and cassettes. Hint: pulling the tape from the opposite of the "take-up" side with a pen, shaking it, and then letting it slide back will ease excess tensions and allow it to play again. I can't tell you how many free tapes I got this way!!
It also led to a career in broadcast radio after college.
Congratulations and best of luck at RIT!!

You were a monopoly for a quick second. Not just a bilateral monopoly, no--so many rich people were going flippin' crazy for that thing. Why? Dunno, I'd rather hire a guy to read your instructions and do it himself with 10 iPhones to try it out on. I would have went with nothing below $70,000 and donated $15,000 to your teammates. Whatever, though, you'll be making that money back in no time.

Drop out of high school for publicity. I dare you.

Dude, is not only the insurance and registration you'll have to pay to own that car. The IRS and your states' tax collecting agency will haunt you. A car like that is raising your annual income to more than 30 grands. You will probably owe more than 16% of that money to the feds and some additional 5% to the state you live in (except you're in one of those lucky states that don't pay income tax). Be very careful in the future with this kind of deal. Things like the one you pulled are once in a lifetime opportunities, if you ever encounter one again, be wise and seek financial advice. Thanks for the great job and keep up the good work.

You aren't a hacker. You are just a fucking script kiddie with no life, and you should be beaten and sent to Juvenal Hall. People don't hack these phones for fun. A hacker is 99% of the time someone who cracks hardware and software to help the company's fix it. Well guess what, I'm big friends with Apple, and when you do this you are screwing them over. I will see to it that Apple and AT&T does something about this. Stupid kid, go to school and grow up. OH, don't delete comments because they hurt your feelings either. That shows how kiddish you are.

BRT07tC said...

That was BY FAR the RUDEST thing that I have seen anyone say online. You should be the one beaten! It's people like you that make the world horrible.

And congrats! I think you did the RIGHT choice!

L7 said...

You know, a lot of people posting here think you should have taken the big bucks. They also think college is a vocational job training facility. They worry about insurance, taxes, the right attorney, auction laws.

The fact of the matter is that you figured something out. You stuck to it until you got it. If I get shot down on an alien planet, or New Orleans for that matter, you are the kind of person that we want onboard.

Go to college, have fun, learn a lot of interesting and seemingly useless things.

When you finish college, the world will have changed, but there is always a demand for hands-on, don't take no for an answer, people who accomplish things.

Bet you can't tweak the computer in the 350Z to give you 40 miles per gallon.

Apple didn't get hurt at all, all the way around, they will sell more phones and they will get more revenue and if AT&T is smart they make a $49.99 plan for iphone unlimited use and people will sign more with them. Could be a win/win situation for apple and at&t. For apple already is and will see how smart at&t is to gain iphone owners as customers. PRICE-PRICE-PRICE at&t $49.99 unlimited use.By lowering the price they will gain volume versus dropping revenue

SadCommentary said...

It's a sad commentary on our society that unlocking the iphone is seen as such a grandiose accomplishment. Apple spent a fortune on development, AT&T has made a huge investment, and the unlocking constitutes intentional interference with their contractual relations, which is a tort (a civil wrong) remediable in money damages. Of course, no one will have the guts to sue George, a publicity-seeking minor. George is no hero. A true hero (especially one who proclaims that he does not want to see anyone profit from the unlocking) would have donated the proceeds to a worthy charity. George has had his 15 minutes of fame. Adieu!

All anyone can think of is the money, but let's take a look at this: he and his team just unlocked an iPhone, besting some of the smartest minds at Apple. George is 17 years old and has a spiffy car and phones for his team, but more importantly, national recognition as a up and coming engineer. I saw this kid on Fox News channel talking about this so called "second unlocked iPhone in the world" NOT TRUE. AT&T's exclusivity contract has been breached by a 17 yr. old braniac who will most likely be taken to court before he reaches the doors of college? Good luck geo, I hope your parents can afford good lawyer, you probably will need one soon.
