I came in yesterday and am finally setup. I barely have any free time; there is always something or other scheduled. I will be doing consulting work for Certicell and Puremobile in the little bit of free time I have. My project for now is a GPS for the iPhone that uses triangluation from the cell phone towers. I believe the towers are public record and you can use an AT command to get signal strengh.

«Oldest ‹Older 1 – 200 of 245 Newer› Newest»Great work man. Don't forget to enjoy college. There are lots of hot chicks with iPhones there :-) . You never know what you might get for an unlocked iPhone.
Wow, i know you are going to do just fine, you are a very smart person, and there is too much ahead for you and people like you, i know it is very hard to get all you time and mind into a simgle objective, but you did it all the way, congratulations, and greetings from Mexico, by the way, i am a computer engineer, and i will try to find a software solution for the iphone (i hope) by fist i need to get one, jeje.
Isn't cell phone triangulation what Mologogo uses?
Welcome to RIT... I am an alumni RIT student. I bet you will meet a lot of deaf students.
Good luck with RIT... I expect you're already quite popular here :-).
Congratulations. I hope 1 day I can be like you.
Hi, George. I'm a writer in Minnesota (www.rakemag.com) doing a story on kids, imagination, and technology. I would love to get a comment from you, considering your recent accomplishment and all the buzz about it. The fact is, TV and screen time dampens most kids' imaginative capacities and their tolerance for frustration, etc. But you must have ample amounts of both. I'm sure 500 hours to hack the iphone involved some frustration. Anyway, I would really appreciate a few words with you, by phone or email.
Thanks!
Jeannine Ouellette
In Certicell website mention the consulting deal but you forgot to mention the training to unlock the iphone. From Certicell website:Certicell has entered into a consulting agreement with Mr. Hotz in order to train its staff on the unlocking process and provide technical support to solve other handset software issues.
Why will someone in the cell business want his staff train in the unlocking process??
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
So no matter what George say somehow and someone it will be making tons of money out of this. Even that Certicell claims that he don't have plans to market the unlocking, so why to train his staff. Everybody have its prize, yours was a car when you could get 1000's of cars. Sorry kid you sold yourself very cheap.
nice job way to make jobbs sit up in the middle of the night going "Hacked by a 17 year old" Doh!
You are a genius. However one never knows that the information you got from people you who helped you to unclok the phone might be indirectly connected to Apple?
They needed a unlocked phone as the sales were dipping, and hey what has apple have to lose.
You're going to scheduled events? That doesn't sound like you....
Brazil´s Thanks a lot ! keep walking !
Hey, welcome to Rochester! I found out about you by visiting my grandma's this weekend. She lives in a very small town out in the middle of nowhere (near Syracuse, kinda), and even their small publication had your success on the front page. Have fun at RIT :)
Nice Setup man, can't wait to see what you do next!
great work dude. congratulation!

Hey u r famous in Brazil!!!

Good work. I have been hacking usb hid stuff to make them work the way I like them, moving buttons around and so forth. same with gps and marine tronics, as well as redoing my EFI on truck to get better mileage.
You would be doing yourself a favor to go to sparkfun and check out their goods.
once again nice hack for both the soft and hard ware. study hard.
all the techies at VT and WPI I know are proud of you. once again study and party hard.

oops forgot.
there are a lot of people
telling you to profit from this.
that's up to you.

i would focus on school and do ...

hey there George, I live in Rochester, NY and will probably be going to RIT next year when you are a sophomore, email me at nonamebowler@gmail.com, id love to talk to you
I am a RIT alumnus as well. It is a great school ... what program are you in?
Good for you dude!
I grew up in Midland Park, almost neighbors...
Enjoy college and ignore the haters...They should give you some iphone beater scholarship :)
Enjoy some Country Sweet Chicken and Wings! maybe a midnight trip to Nick Tahoes also... Rock On!
George, I have MS and I am very excited that you will be studying nueroscience, and "hacking the brain." Remember when you are exhausted from studying, that there are people waiting for the great work you will do in the future. Rock on!
What are the chances you could get working on a Verizon crack..? It's a long cold winter up there in Rochester.
Dude, you are going to be rolling in it. WTG. When you need some popcorn at school, let us know!

You may or may not know who I am, but good job. This is the way I started. I was at my prime in Legions Of the Underground at 17. You've got a lot of great things ahead. Stay focused!

btw: if you need to contact me sat2pc@gmail.com
It'd be funny if Apple didn't try to hire you at some point. Just curious - have they contacted you?
Good luck at college man, you re obviously an extremely intelligent person. Get as far as you can in life, and don't ever let anyone hold you back.
Great.....
BTW great Hack!
"their" is spelt "there" when speaking the way in which you have.

Congratulations George Hotz! Have an awesome time in college, at RIT. I have a technology show: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/showdown and when time allots I may email you about having a scheduled appearance on the show. Its not quite CNBC or CNN, lol, but it would be awesome to have you on the show at some point.

Sadly to say, cellular towers are not public access in the USA. Public cellular towers would lead to people just banding a random cellular phone to their network without paying. It does not work as a wireless access point. This is why there are network-specific cellular towers. Good luck on "hacking" into one of those!
P.S. 'Neuroscience' is not offered at RIT as a course. We at RIT do not offer a medical field whatsoever.
It's nice to know that, as smart as you are, you still don't know the difference in spelling "their," as opposed to "there." Ahhh... I feel better about myself now :)
LOL.. Just teasin ya. Great job, kid!
P.S. to anyone who wants the iPhone for the Verizon network, you are S.O.L. It cannot be used on Verizon's CDMA network. Currently the iPhone is GSM which is entirely incompatible with CDMA. The iPhone was never intended to be used on a CDMA network since most CDMA phones have restricted and/or missing software on the phones in order to make the subscribers pay more to access them. Example(VCast, mobile web 1.0, 2.0, ringtones).
George - I have a friend that owns a GPS solutions company. He should be able to assist in the triangulation quest.

Congratulations on cracking the phone. I hope your future is bright. Maybe you should know what it REALLY COSTS. My wife works for AT@T supporting these phones. Now it looks like she may be facing layoffs because of your hack. With me off the job from injury, it looks like my family's future is uncertain, but hey, thousands of people can have a cracked phone and save big money for themselves. Good for you. Im certain your future is set. I just thought you'd like to know what your hack really cost.
hai ,congratulation's on your discovery.
see i am interested in hacking , but i find that there are no sources for me to learn it .can u help me ?
contact me at villainarun@gmail.com
Congrats! Check out Computer Science House while you're there, we've done some pretty cool hacks too.
I do commend you on the work you did with the iphone. Personally I do not use one, as its overly hyped. I like it though when corporate america thinks they know all and someone comes along to show them they dont. Truth be told though you are probably helping out apple more than anything as they entered the agreement with at&t for monetary reasons, there are a lot of people though who do not use at&t.
So for those people they dont want an iphone especially if they are happy with their carrier, but if they had the chance to have an iphone on their carrier they would. So they are gaining quite a few sales they would of been in the first place.
I have made some things and figured some things out myself only to be called a hacker and looked upon as malicious. Its funny because if corporate america decided they wanted unlocking of cells to be illegal that you too would of been persecuted in this manner. Normally being innovative is frowned upon for some reason.
Also correct me if Im wrong but isnt triangulation using cell towers less accurate to gps. Also you cant call something that triangulates a position in regards to a group of cell towers gps as gps refers to global positioning satellites. Once again good work and its nice to see some people commending hackers once again as it used to be.
ei this is gerard from the Philippines, is the unlocked iphone can also be used outside US particularly here in the Philippines? u can email me at demonryder@yahoo.com

Hey buddy!
You are brilliant and naive money-wise speaking, which is good for your age! Great for you.
Just a brief comment about your triangulation project: Motorola had a system (not longer in use) that worked with the messaging between BTSs (Base Stations) and the terminal (cell phone) based in CDMA networks. If interested, let me know.

dude....you are stupid.....you could've gotten more than 20 million dollars for your work....you really traded it for a flashy car and some free phones?.....it's amazing how cheap corporations can buy out intelligence these days....in 3 years you'll have nothing to show for your accomplishment and the other cell comanies will continiue to rake in the cash via adverts and commercials on the phones....you have to be able to see better into the future.....these phones enable users to download music and video and stream it.....that means...all of the networks sponsers now can advertise and expand their consumer base.....you just gave them billions...and in return you got a car and a free phone...

I HAVE A VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION TO ASK YOU WOULD YOU PLEASE E-MAIL ME AT panamericanqueens03@yahoo.com thank you for your time DEBRA
nice work and good for you, GOD bless :)
My friend already crack that phone 3 weeks ago.. in mid july.. after destroying 3 iphone.. we now can use it on T-Mobile.. we located in Oakland..
You wasn't lying when talking about loosing sleep and weight on those endless night trying to crack it...

What are you doing with your 3000GT? I am working on a design for an electric car, with the goal of making a design that can be a useful commuter, while at the same time having some style and being feasible for large numbers of people. Paying 98k for a Tesla is not a widespread option. Instead, creating the design, identifying the sources and then posting all on the web would be much higher impact. If you are willing to unload the car without the engine in place, it would be a perfect donor. Email me if you have time to speak further. Thanks and congratulations.
All hail the Guru! We hail you from Nigeria. Hope our youth here can divert their attention to something productive that "SCAMS" (thank God its reducing). I hope to buy an iPhone and bring it down here.
Stay cool, sky is ur starting-point.!
Welcome to RIT... I am an former RIT student. Good job hacking the phone.. Many students at RIT use Tmobile, don't be surprized if they all running up to u.. haha.. Good luck with RIT, and ur major. beware of Gracies ;-( definally check out the ritz awesome hang out.. and enjoy the campus.. :)

Don't tell them everything!!
Keep some secrets to yourself.
hey man good job unlocking the iphone i was wondering if there was a way to unlock the iphone to use verizon since they dont use sim cards?
From an old RIT grad, congrats on your success, and thanks for picking RIT. It's a great school, and you will bring some much-needed media focus to them. Perhaps Mr. Golisano will name a lab in his building after you!

it only work on a gsm network.
George,
You are the greatest! I love the work you do and all that brain power. Go get them!!!!!! Victoria
Oh my GOD... If one more person posts asking about a "Verizon Hack"...
Verizon works on an entirely different communications technology and protocol than AT&T or T-Mobile!!! GSM phones will never be compatible with a CDMA network!!! It would require a whole different hardware version of the iPhone. Stop asking!
Congratulations, man!!! I'm speaking from Brazil and I really happy to know that you iniciated a new page of history for the iPhone world wide!!!
Enjoy college!!!
Hey Bud, EXCELLENT WORK on the iphone hack. I'm an RIT senior if you ever want the hook up for parties or nightlife, or anything at RIT. Im a car guy too and know a couple tuning shops in rochester to hook up your new 350z!

George post a picture of the car man!!
Oi!
Sou brasileiro e me orgulhei com o seu feito.
Ter a capacidade e atitude de desbloquear um aparelho tão moderno, com tão pouca idade.
Seu talento é algo maravilhoso!
Parabéns e muito sucesso!
Great work, you better watch yourself, AT&T or Apple might come after you and set an example, because what you did is illegal(not unlocking the phone for personal use, but unlocking the phone and selling it). I wish you the best of luck.
SO.... Where are the pics of the ride?
Good work, man! Congrats!

Dude. Good job. But T-Mobile on the RIT Campus can be alittle sketchy. I know first hand.

Congratulations on your achievement. I am a high school teacher and give a weekly news quiz. Your achievement was inspiring to my seniors this week as a bit of proof that with perserverence, collaboration and intelligence, you can achieve great things. Good luck in college and the next leg of your journey in life.
George:
At the age of 17 you have learned the secret of success in college, in med school and in life; its perseverance and tenacity. With 32 doctoral candidates only two of us made it; #1 an IBM scientist and me about 3rd from the bottom. But like you I learned the secret. Good luck in your endeavors.

You da man!!! It's great that you got something besides self gratification, which every teenager can provide for himself. Don't forget the taxes that you will owe on the car which will probably be close to $10,000. Ouch!!! Good luck at RIT, I expect we'll be hearing more about you in the coming years.

Just a comment on the GPS project. Using cell towers will function much the same way as the WAAS system - using trilateration not triangulation. It will use the distance between each tower to provide the location not an angle.
I see you got a Nissan 350Z for your phone. Feel free to join other 350Z enthusiasts at www.350zfrenzy.com I go by Dr Bonz there. Look me up!
With your GPS you would need navigation like Google Earth on Mobile. We got it at 3DVU running on MS Mobile at www.navi2go.net/route (from your mobile). It is the way of the future. On PC you can log on to navi2gi.com. You may contact me at isaacl@3dvu.com to cooperate. Isaac

How can I be like you? How can I be a freaking super genius?
Congratulations! You make Jersey look good :) Keep up the good work.

I hope you make a "how to, step by step" for the unlock one day so we can all try it, us that are not very good like you.
thanks again
Hey, wait, is that a PC on your desk?? Running VISTA?? Bah!
Good work though, and enjoy the new chica-magnet.
As a 28 year old with graduate degrees in electrical engineering and computer science, a small tear came to my eye when I saw this story. Perhaps it was the pureness and innocence of George Hotz's effort and intentions. Or a better reason why this story has many engineers waxing nostalgic is this: George is an extraordinary reminder that in this age of instant gratification and quick money, there are still people out there who realize that achieving great things requires patience and persistence. In every business, great achievements are often stifled by politics, law, and money. The same is true for engineering businesses, where engineers are forced to split their time between true engineering tasks and administrative meetings. George should be proof to the Fortune 100 companies of the world that while you can throw hundreds of engineers at a problem, it only takes one person with the right solution to make all difference.

When I heard about this, I felt bad for AT&T. For about 2 seconds. Can you please do something about Microsoft? Like, fix it?
hey george,

Your awesome - I went through your blog, and although I could barely understand what you were saying (I don't know the computer language well enough to understand), I can tell how much how work this all took! Congrats, and enjoy college and all the benefits you'll receive from your accomplishment, you deserve it!
Congrats. You seem like a smart guy. Watch out for the world, don't let it take advantage of you or change you.
So, now you know how much fun is to be had once you peel off the sticker that says, "No user-serviceable parts inside." Welcome aboard. You will get much more advice than you want - try to remember that, whatever their motivation, most people are really trying to give you good advice. Mine is: "Nod, smile, and move on. And, whatever else you do, don't let them use you up."
Excellent Job!
Congratulations to you and your team for getting this done!
Good luck to you and hope that your future only gets brighter!

Just thought I would comment on how amazing your hack is. The most my hubby and I have done is software unlocking from Cingular/AT&T to T-Mobile. There is NO WAY in a million years I would consider doing your hack, but it was interesting to read about. I learned some stuff in the process. And for all the ppl that try to throw some guilt at you for doing this, eh, they'll get over it.
In the meantime, enjoy your college years. As someone in their mid 30s can attest, they were the best years I ever had, and had lots of fun. Enjoy and Godspeed.
Congrats, you did well for yourself young man, keep it up and stay sharp!

You should have gotten a lawyer before you did any dealing with Certicell. This guy is the one who is going to make a fortune off of your finding. You could have bought any kind of vehicle. You really sold yourself cheap. I'm sure you will do good in life anyway, but this was your meal ticket. Good Luck to you.
To all you people saying he sold himself cheap. From reading on this blog and certicell the deal of 3 iphones and a car was for the iphone it's self right?
Taken from certicell:
"Along with receiving the famous phone, Certicell has entered into a consulting agreement with Mr. Hotz in order to train its staff on the unlocking process and provide technical support to solve other handset software issues."
How do you guys know that with that agreemnt, he's not in for a share of 20% of the profits from future sales of unlocked iphones?
I know if i struck a deal like that, i'd not want it public knowledge either
You should work on a Automated Lightcraft Vehicle that is run through GPS.
Hey man! I'm from a foreign country (Portugal) and I wish you good luck to you and the ones you love most. You're a brave guy and you'll do good things in the world. don't ever change your ideals for material values! 5 stars!
What is everyone making such a fuss for? Anyone with an ounce of IT experience could have hacked iPhone. What makes me so mad is if Hotz was black he would be in jail right now. White people are always taking credit when the discovery is something they consider to be great. When in fact any two bit hacker could have hacked iPhone.
Congratulations from New Zealand. I can't wait to get my iPhone going on Vodafone. I hope you crack the triangulation prob as I could use that too. Good luck with your studies... btw, did I tell you... you're a legend bro. Hotz stuff!!!
The devotion that project took was awesome and the fact you gave those 3 iphones away demonstrates what a great person you are. Best of luck in future projects!

good luck in college and stay the way you are man cause there are lots of people that would of took a different approach to what you did, people like us go far
George Hotz is a new forge.
obviously your probably swamped with work being a freshman at college, moving into a new place, and just getting settled in. I'm probably one of many who would like you ask you a couple questions. I have a T-mobile account, and i hate my T-mobile phone, the T-mobile dash.. its slow, it freezes, and the programs are limited. The iphone has been what i've been looking to get, and finally i can since there is a way to unlock it. But do you think you can put out a video of exactly how to do it? The pictures are hard to depict, and the directions are quite confusing. Thanks -Rob
A new way to maybe make MONEY?
please help me if you can?
I have an Idea..on ebay the retro motorola brick phones are hot items...the analog ones..
so? Is there a way to apply the ESN into todays technology and see if they work. I know they say no?
but is it really true?
remember the E911 legislation because if you take any ..any phone no matter what age and dial 911 it still goes through the towers active age or not?
bricks are great and If you could develop a plan and make them work on the networks you would sell these guys for 1000 bucks a piece so people in bars could look cool again with brick phones.
anyway...
any ideas...
Dude, very impressive.

Requesting for a written interview from Hong Kong
Hello George, my name is Thomas Ting and I am a reporter from a Hong Kong newspaper. Unlocking iPhone, not only in the States, it is also a big news in Hong Kong, cos people likes hi-tech product and blogs etc. much here.
As our content focus on young and talented people, I would like to ask for you permission to grant me a short, written interview, I have send an email to you, please kindly take a look and reply me if possible.
If you dont mind, please drop me a line at tkc_ting@yahoo.com.hk , and feel free to ask me anything.
Thank you very much!!
Cheers,
Thomas
CONGRATS!!!! Try and engoy college, the time there goes by real fast.
George I've followed your work for the past couple of days since I heard about what you did and I just watched you on CNN. I'm certain your name will carry on for years to come and it will have nothin to do with the iPhone or what you've done over the past few months enjoy your new car (sweet!) and I hope that you can find a good use for that brain of yours. U R l33t.
DNA Hack Challenge.
Dear Mr. Hotz
I have read somewhere that you were interested in the study neuroscience. I'll get right to the point.
I currently am afflicted with a rare type of brain cancer; Anaplastic Astrocytoma located in the occipital lobe. The mass is approximately 7.5cm x 3.5cm, or the size of a pill bottle.
I believe that the only way to stop the growth of these cancerous cells is to "hack" the DNA which causes these cells to multiply. The DNA within the cells must be tricked or the "recipe" for reproducing, changed.
I do not have the time, the energy, or the knowledge to apply myself in order to find a solution. This is where you come in. Since you are driven to use unconventional methods for solving complex problems, could you apply yourself to hack "the first computer", our DNA.
Thank you and good luck
dude you did it !
good wishes from ravi,india
You did it . thats very nice and challenging thing you did. Congratulation dude
Ya know really, the china people sell unlocked phones, many clones. I am sure they cracked it first to sell the clones.
This is not a major hack. Thats why the low level companies got him a car swap.
Ok, another offer.... I have multiple ideas but no tech skills. Ycombinator (Ycombinator.com) has a wonderful mind set to help people of all ages. They look for bright people preferably with tech skills. I have one but not the other.
Should you decide schooling is not what stimulates you, this is an opportunity to show industry leaders your total package.
Thank you for reading this.

The activities here are a pain, huh? They rarely give us free time. I'm a freshman at RIT too.
Good luck creating the GPS system for the iphone. Sounds like fun.
Jersus christ, haha damn I was surprised when I saw your report on the news, just so you know the news didn't just make it all over the US, I live in Mexico and we recieved the news I believe the same day or one day after. Great job my friend, truly a "piece of history".

GeoHot: you may find a faster way to get what you want...I encountered a company that wrote a GPS triangulation app for any GSM phone called 'T-zone', written sometime in 2001. No, not the T-mobile thingie, this was somewhere in Zurich, Switzerland. it was an opt-in thing and all you needed to do was send an SMS to one of your opt-in friends and it would 'triangulate' and tell you what street and cross-street they were on.
I checked the 'Wayback' machine...no go so far...
I know Swisscom offered it...but the company who wrote the T-zone app. went out of business... FYI. Paul G.
