I imagine you already have received a lot of advice from legal experts and finical investors about your auction on e-bay but have you given the thought of putting it up with a legit auction enterprise? I know there are fee and what not if it isn’t all about money they/you can screen your bidders. (BTW, I could be way off because I really don’t know anything on how auctions work)
Also, I’ve read about people wishing this was an 8gb iPhone… Uhmm, maybe again I’m wrong about this but I don’t believe people are bidding or want to buy this phone for the actually functionality and capacity of the phone but more the innovation and the idea of technology history.

I think people would spend millions. i've been using ebay for a long time and I've come to realize that you have to checkout their previous ebay history. For example I noticed each bidder had good ratings. Another thing is that when it's a fraud bid it will most likely jump in dollar ammount by an outrageous ammount. Like if your bid was at lets say $5,000 then some bidder came in and bid something like 4 million. that is an extreme jump in dollar ammount. That would most likely be fraud. But I was looking at the bid history on your auction and noticed that it didn't just jump. it gradually increased with trusted ebay members (by trusted i mean they have excellent ratings and feedback). You should of let the auction end and if the winning bidder has bad feedback or is a new member then do the "second chance offer" to the next "trusted" ebayer. Food for thought. By the way I plan to buy an iphone and follow your how to guude to unlock it. I haven't used a soldering iron in years so wish me luck. Also if you can send me any tips to complete this process without screwing up a 600 dollar phone that would be greatly appreciated.
About the Auction Company...I wouldn't bother. There are already people who have legitimately offered between 5-10,000, which is much more than George was expecting I am sure.
If I had the money, I'm sure I would buy it as a piece of history, yes. Then I would lock it up in a display case, and pay (or wait for free) to software unlock my 8 GB. ;)

I think that posting a site with the true step-by-step process of how to unlock your iphone (in plain english and will links to all resources needed) should be a great way to spread the word and collect some money. Besides, it was you and your team's invention and there's nothing wrong with receiving donations. True that you could sell the idea for a few bucks, but then I'm not sure how the other phone unlocking softwares out there for sale work and how is their liability. Patent the unlock?
You have hit gold here. Whatever you decide to do, make sure that 1) is easily understandable by even a monkey, 2) you allow yourself to receive donations, 3) you define that this is just for educational or recreational purposes only, and all donations will be accepted with the condition that is not a sale, but a contribution to the work put on the project.
If it doesn't work, place the instructions in an offshore site and charge $50 for the info. Whatever you decide to do I'll be waiting to pay myself and get the info in plain English!

You can eliminate most of the fraudulent bids by re-listing the phone and LIMITING BIDDERS TO PAYPAL REGISTERED BIDDERS ONLY. Paypal registered bidders have had their identity verified by a US Bank. This allows ebay to have a trial back to any bidders who are like these jealous ass-hole bloggers who screwed with your auction. They can prosecute fraud.
My advice - pull the auction and start over with the paypal limitation.
Nearly 60 day X 8 Hours a day of hard work deserves to pay. Hope You Get a good offer for that iPhone. Take Care.
yeah I'm gonna replicate your steps then create macros and batch files to do all the work so all the user has to do is hookup the hardware and follow the onscreen instructions....also i'm gonna look into hooking up the hardware without hardwiring it on the board i have some old phones here that i can practice on and some other boards with small traces on it...maybe i can hook something magnetic up ...i probably gonna brick some phones by trying to use a magnet so i will try a bunch of diffrent things if somebody could point me at the "sensitive magnetic areas on the phone that would be cool" ...GO SOFTWARE UN-LOCK!
I have to commend you on your work, while unlocking the iPhone isn't really a "huge" deal, and would have been done regardless by someone else, the big point here is that you did it just because. What you have really done is brought back the true definition of a hacker.
I do have some suggestions, while you are very bright and you have some very good views, especially with your view that knowledge is free, which is something that a lot of people don't realize unfortunately
However, you are young and you might lack some wisdom to realize that while you followed the right path and landed with some really good morals, you have to remember that 99% of our society is on a completely different page. Just look at what people are doing to your blog, most of it is advertising their websites, using your accomplishments to easily promote themselves, plus you have people trying to profit off this already and boy did they mess up your e-bay sale.
Don't get overly frustrated, it is something we learn over-time through mistakes, and I hope that this whole thing turns and instead of just being about a cool kid that unlocked the first iPhone, it will go more to show how selfish our society really is, and just how beneficial free knowledge can be as long as it STAYS free. first of all - well done! I agree with tygswagel - your first step should be to hire an attorney and go then to hire a legitimate auction house to represent you, such as christie's or sotheby's although they charge a high commission you are guaranteed results and they can probably setup an auction quickly and have it online as well - the difference with them compared to eBay is that bidders have to be pre-approved and have a financial history with them - also if you are so inclined for a new car - I'm sure there may be a way to offer the phone as a trade or barter for a compareably priced automobile -

If you sell the phone without ebay, use a service like escrow.com so you can be sure to get your money.
You should put google ads on your site and start posting 2 or 3 times a day. You are a smart enough young man that people will want to go to your blog daily to see what you have to say. And a certain percentage will click the ads allowing you to make a few thousand dollars a year in click money.

I was the lady who wrote to you through eBay giving you instructions on how to end your auction without incuring eBay fees. I see that you were able to end your auction with zero bids. Good for you!
Hopefully, eBay will not charge you anything other than the money associated with the 'insertion fee' you incurred when first listing your iPhone.

eBay was probably loving all of the publicity associated with your auction - so, no wonder they were not cooperative in helping you end the auction. Plus, they were hoping for a big fat percentage of the price your iPhone would finally sell for. eBay is all about the dollar and is not known for being cooperative by helping people who are in dangerous financial situations on their auction site.
Live Help is worthless on eBay & eBay is just not a cooperative organization - so sorry you had this bad experience.
If I were you - I would call the credit card company of the card you have on file with eBay, tell them what happened, advise them that no charges are to be made on that card by eBay and then cancel the card (so eBay can't hit you up for any huge charges). Your credit card company will issue you a new card with a new number.
Your credit card company should be able to do that in a few short days - and then you will have the use of your card while in are starting college. You may have used your parents card or a friends card to open your 'seller account' on eBay - please do them a favor and tell them the situation & to act quickly.
